Alvie L. Henry

Alvie L. Henry, 83, of 1104 S. 6th St., died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at the Bethany-Riverside Nursing Home.

He was born in Alcester, S.D., on Dec 2, 1918, to Merton and Amy (Nelson) Henry. Amy passed away when Alvie was 14. He was raised by his father Merton and stepmother, Opal.

At age 16, Alvie joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. He then entered the U.S. Army and served during WW ll. He married Ruth Miller on November 17, 1945, in LaCrosse.

Alvie worked at the Trane Co. for 28 years, retiring in 1976. After retiring from Trane, he owned and operated Henry's Lawn Mower Sharpening until 1998.

He is survived by his wife Ruth; two sons, Jan (Kathy) of Sparta, Wis., and Tim (Kathy) of Marlinton, W. Va.; five granddaughters, Paula, Leslie, Peggy (Mark) Slominski, Beth Henry, Ginger Henry and Amy Henry; four great-grandchildren, Nicholas, Mathew and Jacob Leslie and Megan Slominski; three sisters, Eddie (Paul) Newberg of Akron, Iowa, Bonnie (Orlin) Anderson of Webster, Wis., and Glenda (Babatunda) Masha of Lagos, Nigeria; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and stepmother and his sister Beatrice Henry.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 25 at 10 a.m. at the chapel at Bethany-Riverside Nursing Home. The Rev. Gregory N. Friedrich will officiate. Entombment, with military honors, will take place in the Gardens of Peace Mausoleum, Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call at the Schumacher-Kish Funeral Home, La Crosse, on Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m., and at Bethany-Riverside Nursing Home on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service.

Alvie's family would like to thank the staff at Bethany-Riverside for the excellent care given to Alvie. Also, they would request memorials be made to Bethany-Riverside.
