Bernard "Bud" Fullenkamp, Sioux Falls, SD, formerly of Hudson, SD, died January 30, 2011, at Dougherty Hospice House, Sioux Falls, SD. He was 98.
Bernard William Fullenkamp was born December 3, 1912, at Burbank, SD, to George and Christina (Meierotto) Fullenkamp. He graduated from high school in Vermillion; SD. Bud then attended CCC Camp in the Black Hills of SD, earning enough money to pay his own college tuition. He then attended SDSU where he graduated from the School of Pharmacy in 1939.
He was united in marriage to Mary Mattes at St. Bernard's Catholic Parish in Redfield, SD. Bud began his pharmacy career in Hudson, SD at Detlie Drug Store. For a period of time, the family moved to Redfield where he also worked as a pharmacist. In the 1950's, the family returned to Hudson and Bud purchased the drug store.
During his career at Hudson, Bud became an investor and served on the board of the nursing home, was school board president, a volunteer EMT on the ambulance service, and was a member of St. Mary Church, Rock Valley, IA, where he served as Lector and Eucharistic Minister. Bud was also an active memeber of the Knights of Columbus where he was a Fourth Degree Knight. Throughout the years, he was involved in countless other community projects and events. In addition to his service to church and community, Bud and Mary owned and operated Christmas in the Attic and the Country Store Emporium. Bud retired in 1989, at the age of 77.
Over the years, the couple enjoyed travelling to the east coast going to drug conventions and retail gift shows. Mary preceded Bud in death on January 17, 2002.
Bud loved music and enjoyed playing the violin and harmonica. A self-taught organist, he enjoyed playing even up to two weeks ago.
Blessed with a spirit of compassion and kindness, Bud's memory will forever be cherished by all who knew him.
Grateful for having shared his life are his son, Michael Fullenkamp (Judith), Hartford, SD; daughter, Ann Hesla (Pete), Hudson, SD; six grandchildren, Neili Fullenkamp (Pat Fokken), Vicky Rohl (Eli), Penny Fullenkamp, Emilee Fullenkamp, Amanda Drymalski (Mark), Scott Hesla (Chelsea), John Hesla (Kate); eight great-grandchildren, Gracy and Nolan Rohl, Nora, Nathan and Bennett Drymalski, Celia Fullenkamp, William Hesla, a newborn infant expected on February 12, and Ava Fullenkamp; special nieces, Suzi and Lexi Grote and Ann J. Fullenkamp; and several other nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his grandson, Ben Fullenkamp; great-grandson, Grant Bernard Rohl; brothers, George, Joseph, Frances, James; sisters, Marie, Evelan, Valeria, Dorthy; and his parents.
Memorial Mass was celebrated 2:00pm Friday, February 4, 2011, at the Sacred Heart Chapel of Prince of Peace in Sioux Falls. Private interment will be held at St. Mary's Cemetery in Rock Valley, Iowa. Visitation begins at noon, Thursday with the family present to greet friends from 5:00 to 6:30, and a Scripture Service beginning at 6:30 at Thursday evening at Miller Funeral Home, 507 S. Main Avenue.
