Ames Items Donated
The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Museum of South Dakota gets a lot of email. We get cards and letters. We get photos and memorabilia from the CCC days. In the last couple of months, we've added over 200 names to our roster of South Dakota CCC men. That comes after the last reprint and that had over 200 from the time of the last printing.
The sources for enrollee names are camp newspapers, local newspaper articles, Corps Area Annuals from the years of the CCC program, project files, etc. Many names, however, are hand delivered to the museum or sent through the mail by family members and friends. These are not just names. They often include the story(s) of the time spent by these men doing the work of the program.
We exchanged several emails with Patty Chapman. She indicated that her father, Cleo Oscar Ames, was in the CCC. We did not have his name among the thousands of names we have recorded. Ms. Chapman asked if we would be interested in receiving documentation and some photos of her father's time in the Cs? The answer? Absolutely!
The content of the box received at the Museum is shown below. Most of the photos, numbering in the hundreds, were taken by Cleo Ames.
The items will be digitized for viewing and the originals will be archived for preservation. Thank you Patty Chapman for your wonderful donation to the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum of South Dakota.
