Joseph Carroll Sargent (Joe)

Gregory, SD

1934, 2756, Farm Island, S-207,
1935, 2756, Farm Island, S-207, Ass't Leader
1937, 2756, Farm Island, S-207, Leader
1939-41, 4726, American Island, SP-5,

In February, Joe Sargent left this company to accept private employment with the International Harvester Company of Chamberlain. He is one of the few men who has had six years and seven months continuous service in the CCC.

Joe was enrolled in July 1934 near Rapid City. The company moved to Presho, S. D. on Aug. 1, 1934, and he went along, then moved with the company to Pierre. He was promoted to leader in April 1936 as supply steward, then was transferred to Co. 2476 at Alcester. From Alcester he was transferred to Co. 4726 at Crow Creek where he worked as field leader on construction of the large dam there. At Crow Creek he was placed in charge of the tool room and began work in SCS office as clerk in March 1938. This job he held to the date of his discharge.

This history, Joe recalls, brought to mind a number of facts of his career that are interesting. He was a member of three different companies, under nine different COs, and four different project superintendents. He was stationed at five different locations and twice at two of the locations. He moved six times while in the CCC. During this time, he was enrollee 11 months, assistant leader nine months, and leader 59 months. 23 months were spent as project assistant.
