Alvin A. Doerr (Tarzan)

Aberdeen, SD: Memorial service for Alvin A. "Tarzan" Doerr, 91, Aberdeen, was held 1 p.m. Friday, January 15, 2010, at Schriver's Memorial Mortuary and Crematory, 414 5th Ave. N.W., with Pastor Hyle Anderson officiating. A time of fellowship followed the service at Schriver's Memorial Fellowship Center.

Alvin passed away Saturday, January 9, 2010, at Golden Living Center in Groton, S.D.

Alvin A. Doerr was born July 27, 1918, to August and Magdalena (Kallenberger) Doerr in Leola, S.D. He went to Civilian Conservation Camp to fight forest fires in the late 1930s when there was only one face on Mount Rushmore and then moved back to Aberdeen, S.D.

Alvin and Edna Wetzel were united in marriage in 1947 in St. Paul, Minn. They made their home in Aberdeen, where he started Doerr's Tree Service, which has continued on through two sons, Terry and Alvin.

After retiring, he enjoyed collecting antiques, coins and stamps. He had an avid love of playing horseshoes, cards and shooting pool. He always enjoyed family gatherings and having his children, grandkids and great grandkids around.

He is preceded in death by parents, two sisters, two brothers and two sons.

Grateful to have shared Alvin's life are his wife, Edna, of Aberdeen; his children, Terry (Lori) Doerr, of Aberdeen, S.D., Willie (Gail) Doerr of Anoka, Minn., Larry Doerr, of Aberdeen, S.D., Anna (Dean) Perry, of Mina, S.D., Jeannie (Pat) Sanders, of North Dakota, Betty (Wayne) Borge, of Mellette, S.D., Danny Doerr, of Huron, S.D., twins, Duane Doerr, of Dallas, Texas, and Angie (Doug) Hedges, of Fayetteville, N.C., Cindy Doerr, of Aberdeen, S.D., Carol Doerr, of Aberdeen, S.D., Jimmy (Char) Doerr, of Aberdeen, S.D., Shirley (Tom) Rowan, of Palo, Iowa, Alvin Doerr, of Aberdeen, S.D., Robert Doerr of Denver, Colo., David (Beth) Doerr, of Black Hawk, S.D., and twins, Karen Doerr, of Yankton, S.D., Sharon Doerr, of Wyndmere, N.D. Twenty-one grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
