Funeral service for Edwin E. Metzger, 86, of Eureka will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2005, at Zion Lutheran Church at Eureka. The Rev. Dean Nelson and the Rev. Dianne Rood-Kiesz will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery at Eureka. Visitation is Tuesday from 9 a.m. to noon at the funeral home and for one hour prior to the service at the church. He died Feb. 19, 2005, at Avera Eureka Healthcare Center.

Edwin E. Metzger, son of Gustave and Anna Marie (Beck) Metzger was born Sept. 19, 1918, on his parent's homestead in Campbell County, S.D. He was baptized Dec. 22, 1918, at Friendenstahl Lutheran Church and confirmed July 9, 1933, at Hoffnungstal Lutheran Church. He worked on the family farm until he went to work with the Civilian Conservation Corps from October 1937 until April of 1938.

He was united in marriage to Viola Heer on Nov. 28, 1940, in Zion Lutheran Church at Eureka. They made their home on his family farm for one year. They then purchased a farm southeast of Eureka, where they were general farmers, raising small grains and livestock. They retired in 1995 and continued to make their home on the farm. His wife died Dec. 23, 2003.

Edwin and his wife enjoyed traveling and taking bus tours together. They bowled on a couple's league for six years; he was a league bowler for 24 years. He also liked singing and listening to Old Time Music. Those left behind will remember him as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend who loved his family and life of farming. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he had been a two-term church council member and also chairman of the cemetery committee.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth (Doris) Metzger of Arvada, Colo., and Arliss (Kelly) Metzger of Eureka; two daughters, Jocelyn (Karl) Seller of Arvada, Colo., and Lynette Carter of Pierre; one sister, Edna (Ralph) Hoff of Eureka; nine grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. His parents, wife, one daughter, Judith, one son-in-law, two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

Casketbearers will be Brian Metzger, Troy Metzger, Steven Metzger, Jonathan Metzger, Tessa Metzger and Tabitha Metzger. The organist will be Lana Hilgemann and there will be a duet by Margie and Dennis Walker and an accordion medley by Earl Mehlhaff. Carlsen Funeral Home of Eureka has been entrusted with arrangements.
