Carl left high school before graduating to help earn money to support the family during the Depression. A few years later, he served in the CCC. There's a cute photo of him from those days, having a bath in a metal washtub. He looks so young! In WWII, he was in the army, in Florida, where he trained gunners who flew on the big bombers. His wife, Maxine, was with him. After the war, he began having odd medical issues and was eventually diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls. By the mid-1950s, his MS confined him to a wheelchair. It did not confine his wit, humor, and intelligence. His nephews and nieces all loved him and enjoyed his company. Carl lived to age 79.
