Bernard J. Hauck (Barney)

Aberdeen, SD

1937, 1790, Mystic, F-1,

Bernard J. 'Barney' Hauck, 88, of Sioux Falls, passed away peacefully with his family at his side at Good Samaritan Center on Sunday, November 23, 2008 after a battle with Alzheimers.

Bernard was born November 9, 1920 to Barbara (Kaiser) and Valentine Hauck in Aberdeen, SD. He spent his childhood there and attended Aberdeen Central. Bernard served in a CC Camp in the Black Hills, SD in 1937. In 1940, he was called to active duty and proudly served his country in the US Army during W.W. II in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. Sgt. Hauck was honorably discharged in 1945.

Bernard married his bride of 60 years, Geneva Bessel, in 1948 in Sioux Falls where they made their home.

He worked for 40 years as a foreman for Hartung and D&W Construction, building grain elevators throughout the Midwest. Bernard was a true 'North Ender'. He loved his daily walks to the downtown area, around Covell Lake, and through Terrace Park. He spent endless hours with his grandchildren, Erika and Jacob, at the park.

Bernard loved reading, carpentry, sports, and cooking. He was famous for his chocolate chip cookies, cheesecake, and his family often called him the "grill master".

He was a lifetime member of St. Joseph Cathedral and the VFW Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Ed, Bill and Jimmy; and a sister, Teresa.
