Roy Albert Hammill

Roy Albert Hammill, youngest son of Curtis Avery and Clara Isadore Bingham Hammill was born in Ree Heights, South Dakota Hand County on August 5, 1911 and attended rural and town schools in and around Ree Heights.

Roy was in the group of the first to volunteer for the Civilian Conservation Corps on May 5, 1933 and was stationed at Camp Pine Creek near Mount Rushmore.

He was married to Stella Marie Voelker on September 27, 1935 and to this union one daughter was born. They resided on a farm for about five years and then moved to Ree Heights where Roy purchased a filing station and repair shop and operated this for about four years when he and his wife purchased a grocery store known as Hammill's Grocery. They operated the grocery store for 12 years. In 1956, he started work with the Peavey Elevator Company and was employed there until his retirement in 1976.

He served on the Town Board, School Board and Church Board. He was a past Grand Patron of the Grand Chapter of the South Dakota of the Order of the Eastern Star and was serving his 24th year as Deacon of the local church, The United Church of Christ, Congregational.

He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Mrs. Gary (Jeanie) Hartman, Pierre; one brother, Fank Hammill, Ree Heights; two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Blake, Pierre and Mrs. Sheldon (Ethel) Mitchell, Brownsville, TX.
