Oscar S. Gilbertson

Maddock, ND

1941, 2759, Park Creek, F-20, Subaltern

The funeral for Oscar Gilbertson, 84, of Maddock was held Sat. at 11 a.m. at Viking Lutheran Church, rural Maddock. Interment was in the church cemetery in block 4 plot 15. He died Aug. 31, 1993 at the Heart of America Medical Center in Rugby.

Rev. Lori & Rev. Brad Keyser-Boswell officiated. Pallbearers were Randall Aanderud, Lloyd Aanderud, Carroll Gilbertson, Harley Gilbertson, Fred Jacobson, Alton Liudahl, Rolf Berg & Lester Liudahl. The Nelson Funeral Home of Maddock was in charge of arrangements.

Oscar Gilbertson was born Oct. 6, 1908 in South Viking Township of Benson County to John Helmer & Olava Tranby Gilbertson. He attended Bergsgaard School in South Viking Township & high school in Maddock, graduating in 1929. He graduated from NDSU in 1934 with a degree in agriculture. He served in the National Guard from 1931 to 1933 & was commissioned a 2nd lieutenant in the Army Infantry in 1933 through the Army ROTC program. He married Gladys Aanderud in Minneapolis, Minn. Dec. 22, 1937. They lived in Lead, SD in the early 1940's where he was in charge of a Civilian Conservation Corps Camp. In 1942 they moved to his parental farm in South Viking Township of Benson County, where they raised small grains & Hereford cattle until retiring in 1969. They moved into Maddock in 1985. They lived there until April of 1991 when they became residents of the Heart of America Long Term Care Center at Rugby.

He was a lifelong member of the Viking Lutheran Church & served as the congregation's president in 1969. He was active in soil conservation work & served as a member of the Benson County Soil Conservation Board, the Benson County ASCS Committee & the Farmers Home Administration Board. He was a member of the first board of directors of the Maddock Community Center. In 1951 & 1952 he was a veterans agriculture instructor at BCATS in Maddock. Their farm won the Benson County conservation award in the early 1950's. He & his cousin, Chester Ellingson, operated the Home Café in Maddock for a short time. He & his wife ran the Memorial Hospital in Maddock for a time. He was an avid hunter & fisherman. They traveled extensively in the US & Canada.

Survivors include his wife; 2 sons & daughters-in-law, Gary & Florence Gilbertson of Eden Prairie, Minn. & Jimmy & Letitia Gilbertson of Maddock; a daughter & son-in-law, Dorothy & Earl Stegman of Fargo; & 8 grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; 4 brothers, Clarence, Johnny, Amos & Harry; & 2 sisters, Ida Gilbertson & Mabel Carlson.
