Eugene Milton Austin

Colton, SD

U.S. Veteran Eugene Austin, age 84, of Dell Rapids, died on Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at the Dells Area Health Center. Funeral services will begin at 2:00 PM Saturday, October 14, 2006 at First Lutheran Church, Colton. Visitation will begin at 12:00 P.M. on Saturday at the church.

Eugene Austin was born January 16, 1922 in Grand Meadow Township near Colton, South Dakota to parents Henry and Emma (Larson) Austin. He was raised in the Colton area, attended country school and graduated from Lyons High School. Eugene joined the U.S. Navy in October of 1942 and served as a Motor Machinist's Mate Third Class until October of 1945.

Eugene married Flora Helen Palmstein May 6, 1945 in San Francisco, California. The couple lived in the Minneapolis area where he was employed by W.H. Barber until his retirement. They moved to Vergas, Minnesota in 1995 and later to Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. Flora passed away June 17, 2005 and Eugene moved to Dell Rapids that October.

Grateful for having shared his life are his daughter, Dorothy and her husband Jeff Stanley, Des Moines, Iowa; son, Greg Austin, Anoka, Minnesota; six grandchildren, Bill Stanley and his wife Kathy, Bruce Stanley and his wife Stacie, Jean and her husband Mark Wingard, Deanna Austin, Darcy Koontz, and Dodi and her husband Anthony Vessels; six great-grandchildren, Ashley, Laney, Logan, Breanna, Payton, and Blake; brother, Virgil Austin, Dell Rapids; three sisters, Ruth Rivenes, Rapid City, Deloris Austin, Colton, and Darla Amundson, Dell Rapids; special nephew Charlie; and many other relatives and friends.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Flora; three children, Terry, Tricia, and Tim; three sisters, Verda Fods, Norma, and Shirley Moe; and six brothers, Gordon, Kermit, Ray, Melvin, Harold, and Robert Austin.
