Archie E. Miley

Chamberlain, SD

1934, 2756, Farm Island, S-207,

A photo of a cemetery marker was sent to the CCC Museum of South Dakota. At the time we did not know Archie Miley's cause of death. After posting the marker an obituary was shared and research led to the discovery of an article in a CCC camp newspaper. Both have been included below.

MILEY SUCCUMBS TO ACCIDENTS INJURIES

Internal injuries received when he was pinned between 2 trucks at the screening pit early Monday morning caused the death of Archie Miley, of Chamberlain, a member of Co. 2756 since its inception last July.

Immediately after the accident Miley was rushed to St. Mary's hospital in Pierre. A bad break of the right arm was immediately set and placed in a plaster paris cast. At that time a thorough examination revealed that Miley had received internal injuries but while his condition was serious there was nothing alarming discoverable.

Late Monday afternoon the necessity for an operation became apparent. Operated on Monday evening Miley did not respond very well, and death came at two o'clock Tuesday morning.

Archie E. Miley was born at Sioux City, Ia., on April 29, 1916 and was 18 years and 7 months of age at the time of his death. He attended school in Chamberlain and was employed in various capacities. there up to the time he enrolled in the CCC.

Olof Nelson, also of Chamberlain, accompanied the body home where burial will be made. The heartfelt sympathy of Co 2756 goes out to the be reaved parents of Archie.

CCC CAMP YOUTH DIES OF INJURIES

Archie Miley, Miley, Chamberlain, Hurt When Struck by Truck at Pierre Project

Pierre, Nov. 28 - Archie E. Miley of Chamberlain, 18-year-old civilian conservation corps member, died here yesterday of injuries received when he was struck by a truck Monday morning.

Miley is reported to have stepped behind a truck to guide the driver in backing into a gravel pit. In some manner he failed to judge the speed of the truck as it backed and was struck and crushed.

Enrolled in the CCC organization since last July 26, Miley was assigned to the company stationed on Farm Island, in the Missouri river near Pierre.

He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Dolly Miley, and a brother. Funeral services will be at Chamberlain, probably Friday.
