Paul B. Gerken was born on July 25, 1912 at Dallas, South Dakota. He received his grade school education at Dallas and completed his last three years of high school at Gregory in 1932.

Between the time he graduated and his entrance into the Civilian Conservation Corps Paul worked as a salesman for various large commercial firms.

In October 1936 Paul again joined the CCC and was assigned to Company 2754, Wind Cave Camp. During his entire stay there he served as company baker.

On November 15, 1936 he was transferred to this Company by special order to assume the position of mess sergeant.

Paul served as mess sergeant of this Company for a period of fourteen months. On January 15, 1938 he was selected to the position of Senior Leader or First Sergeant.
