Frank E. Cottle, CCC Subaltern, was assigned to this company on November 19, 1940, to replace Mr. Hugo C. Aldrich, transferred to active duty with the United States Army.

In addition to his military employment, Mr. Cottle has had duty as a CCC enrollee. Serving in Company 1790, Rochford, South Dakota, with the first contingent of enrollees in 1933, the new Subaltern was rated as a field leader and assistant educational adviser.

Subaltern Cottle has had a great deal of military experience with the National Guards in addition to his R.O.T.C. work at South Dakota State. The new Subaltern served three years with the 109th Engineers, B company at Brookings, South Dakota, and three years with the 147th Field Artillery at Pierre, South Dakota. Mr. Cottle obtained his commission as a Second Lieutenant in March 1937.

The new Subaltern has spent most of his life in Western South Dakota. He graduated from the eighth grade in Meade County and attended high school in Rapid City and Pierre. Mr. Cottle attended college in Arkansas for two years and summer school in Oklahoma. He obtained his B.S. degree in Journalism at South Dakota State in 1937.

After graduation, Subaltern Cottle worked on several newspapers including the Buffalo. Times-Herald, Miner County Pioneer, Howard, South Dakota; Chamberlain Leader and the Rapid City Advocate.
