Wilbur Burnette Scofield

Flandreau, SD

1935, 2754, Wind Cave, DNP-1

Wilbur B. Scfield, Sept. 3, 1916 - July 20, 1994

Wilbur was born Sept. 3, 1916 in rural Moody County, SD to Burnette and Essie Hay Scofield. He attended school in the Moody County and Brookings County area. After he completed his education, he worked for Watson Sutherland for several years and then joined the CCC's and worked at Wind Cave National Park. He then worked for his Uncle Orvie and Aunt Eunice Scofield trucking and farming. On Dec. 29, 1939 he married Elvera A. Lee on a farm in Moody County. They began farming northeast of Flandreau and lived there until the present time. He was a member of the United Methodist Church.

My Dad is the one on the far right. We called that his "High Speed" hat. He had one similar when he was older. The reason he joined CC camp was because of the poverty at that time and he had lost his mother at age 12. It was difficult for his father to work and maintain a home for 4 children (my dad being the eldest) quit school in the 9th grade so that he could help earn money. The farmer he worked for could no longer afford to pay him, so he joined the CC camp until his Aunt and Uncle said they needed him on their farm. He was 18 at the time.
