Funeral services for Lyle Peterson, 89 of Lower Brule were Friday, January 7, 2005 at 10:30 am at the Reliance Methodist Church in Reliance with burial in the Reliance Cemetery at Reliance.

The third of eleven children, Lyle Emmet Peterson was born on December 4, 1915 to Carl Arthur and Lula Ina (Fletcher) Peterson on the family farm southeast of Reliance.

He attended the Larson Country School and the Cooper Country School near the family farm. In 1933, he graduated from Reliance High School.

After graduation, Lyle joined the Civilian Conservation Corps. and worked at Fort Meade and Farm Island. In November 1942, he enlisted in the Army Air Force. He was in the central training command as an aerial engineer and was able to do a lot of flying.

He worked for a M&M tent show, helped with the advertising, and also worked for Sather Drilling on wells.

July 3, 1946, Lyle was united in marriage to Leola Schaefer at Reliance. To this union, nine children were born. They made their home in Lower Brule. In April of 1952, where to this day they continue to farm and ranch.

In 1966, Lyle became Postmaster at Lower Brule which he did for over 22 years. Over the years he sold Rawleigh Products and returned to work for Sather Drilling.

What a surprise to Lyle when the radio announced the arrival of his son Royal after having all those girls. Lyle was active in the community starting with 4-H as a child and the treasurer of the Lower Brule Community Club when it started in Lower Brule. He was active in the Postmaster Organization, NAPUS, and League, and a long-time member of the South Dakota Stock Growers Association.

He was a 60-year member of the American Legion Unit No. 179, a member of the Reliance Methodist Church for his entire life, lifetime member of the Lyman Co. Historical Society, and Men's Community Club of Lower Brule. Lyle was a past member of many other civic organizations over the years. He was a volunteer for many community events. His hobbies included rodeos, playing cards, softball, collecting record albums, going to the casino, and collecting 'gadgets'. He was known to many people as the 'Candy Man', and always had a handful of candy to hand out.

Lyle passed away January 2, 2005 at the Mid Dakota Medical Center in Chamberlain at the age of 89 years and 30 days.

Gratefully sharing his life is his wife of 58 years, Leola Peterson of Lower Brule; children Cheryl (Pat) Quick of Guernsey, WY, Jeanne (Ivan) Quick of Alliance, NE, Shirley (Roger) Horton of Edgemont, Carlton (Margot) Peterson of Rapid City, Marcia Peterson of Kennebec, Karen (Richard) Quick of Alliance, Becky (Ed) Cole of Alliance, Peggy (Joe) Aguallo of Alliance and Royal Peterson of Lower Brule; sisters Minnie Brech of Philip, SD and Lois Schoenfelder of Washington, IA; brother Roland (Billie Mae) Peterson of Reliance; sisters-in-law:Donna Peterson, Catherine Peterson, and Dorthy Peterson; daughter #8 Wanda (Randy) Peacock of Rapid City; 38 grandchildren; and 28-great grandchildren. He was also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and many others who were loved as part of the family.

Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers: Carl, Walter, Verle, Clare, and Ronald, sisters: Eunice Dunne and Joyce Schaub; and a grandson Roger Keith Horton, Jr.
