Alfred was born August 17, 1916 in Carter, South Dakota to August and Christina (Kershman) Bettcher. He grew up south of Carter, South Dakota. As a teenager, he worked at the Civilian Conservation Corps Camp. His family moved to Dallas, South Dakota in 1937. He married Frieda Hauf on Nov. 24, 1938 in Dallas, South Dakota. He farmed near Dallas and later worked on construction in western South Dakota. He bought his own truck to haul gravel and later drove trucks for construction until he retired. He enjoyed family get-togethers, camping and fishing.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Frieda; three sons, David, Larry and Donald; a daughter, Marlene (James) Donoho; two sisters, Ida and Martha; and one brother, Allen.
Alfred is survived by three sons, Kenneth, Roger and Dennis; three brothers, Richard Verlon and Leonard; nine grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren.
