Mound City, SD

Funeral Services for Walter Pfeitle age 77 of Mound City SD. was Monday, December3, 2001 at 10:30 AM at the Herreid Baptist Church in Herreid with Rev. Jay Clark officiating. Burial was in the Mound City Cemetery under the direction of Kesling Funeral Home of Mobridge, SD. Walter passed away November 29, 2001 at the Mobridge Regional Hospital.

Walter Pfeifle was born along with twin sister Lillian, on November 4, 1924 to Gottlieb and Karolina (Kogele) Pfeifle Sr. on a farm north-west of Herreid, South Dakota. At the early age of 3, he lost his mother and was raised by his father and several hired girls. He attended rural schools in Campbell County and helped supplement the family income by working for neighboring farmers and later the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) where he was assigned to a camp near Sturgis, SD. In April 1943, Walter was inducted into the Army Air Corps and served during World War II in the South Pacific including New Caledonia and Guadalcanal and later in the Philippines and Japan. In February 1946, he was discharged and moved to Sturgis where he worked at Ft. Meade. On September 28, 1947, Walter married Lenore Heisler and they moved to Kansas City, MO, where Walter attended auto mechanics school. After working a short while at his brother's Mound City garage, Walter, along with Lenore, began farming on the Heisler homestead west of Mound City and later continued farming on a farm south of Mound City. In 1960, Walter and Lenore purchased the Mound City grocery store and operated it for 3 years as Walt's U-Save where they taught their children the fine art of candling eggs and stocking shelves.

During this same time, Walter contracted with the U.S. Postal service to deliver mail between the towns of Mound City, Herreid and Pollock (later Eureka) and to serve rural patrons north of Herreid and in southern North Dakota. He continued service for 40 years, retiring in June 2000. Walter was also appointed to the position of Campbell County Director of Equalization serving for 2 years.

Walter contributed to his community by serving on the Mound City School and Town Boards and the Mound City Volunteer Fire Department. He was a member of the Herreid Baptist Church where he served as a sponsor for Teens for Christ, Treasurer, and usher. He was the local Republican committeeman for many years and was nominated as a delegate to the National Republican Convention. He was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion.

Walter is survived by his loving family including his wife, Lenore of Mound City; one son Tom (Mary) Pfeifle of Carlsbad, NM; one daughter Penny (Chris) Nelson of Pierre, SD; Four grandchildren -Heather Schreiner of Brookings, South Dakota, Tim Pfeifle of Bozeman, Montana, Sara Pfeifle of Missoula, Montana and Rebekah Nelson of Pierre, South Dakota. Three brothers - Jake Pfeifle of Tucson, Arizona, Fred Pfeifle (Alice) of Selby, South Dakota and Herbert Geigle of Pompano Beach, Florida. Four sisters - Alvina Aman of the Selby Good Samaritan Center, Elsie (Roy) Rundlett of Mobridge, South Dakota, Irene Oster of Spearfish, South Dakota and Lillian Heisler of Zephyr Hills, Florida. Sisters-in-Law - Verna Pfeifle of Eureka, South Dakota and Rose Pfeifle of Brandon, South Dakota.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers; Gottlieb Jr. and Albert.

Casket bearers were Tom Pfeifle, Chris Nelson, Tim Pfeifle, Heather Schreiner, Sara Pfeifle and Lloyd Kusler.

Honorary Casket bearers were Rebekah Nelson.

Organist was Ruth Mittleider.

Special Music was a double duet of Dianna Quaschnick, Ruth and Pat Mittleider and Phyllis Schaeffer. They were accompanied by Carol Kusler.

The congregation sang "In the Garden" and "How Great Thou Art."

Ushers were Mervin Mittleider and Donley Schaeffer.
