William Syloid Bush

William Syloid Bush, age 85, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, December 30, 2005, at his home in Olivet, South Dakota.

A Memorial Service was held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, January 7, 2006, at the Olivet United Methodist Church in Olivet, SD with Rev. Mary Lee Lint and Rev. Charles Asche officiating. Inurnment will be in the Rosehill Cemetery, Scotland, SD with military graveside rites by Rames-Bender American Legion Post #152, Menno, SD.

Honorary pallbearers were Edgar Mueller, Kent Wintersteen, Richard Ireland and Wayne Dvorak.

Bill was born August 17, 1920, to Harry and Flossie (Gosser) Bush on a farm near Scotland, SD. He graduated from Olivet high School in 1937. In July of 1937, he joined the CCC Camp at Wind Cave National Park, where he worked for four years. In November of 1941, Bill was drafted into the United States Army. During WWII, he served in the Engineer Battalion in Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, Italy, France, Germany, and England. He was honorably discharged in June of 1945. Bill received several medals during his military service: European-African Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, American Defense Service Medal, 5 overseas service bars, no time lost under AW 107, lapel button, 4 discharge Emblems, Legion of Merit, and Good Conduct Medal.

After he returned home, he married the love of his life, Orpha Asche on January 23, 1946, at the Evangelical United Brethen Church in Olivet. They spent 55 years together. They lived in Olivet for a short time before moving to a farm north of Olivet in Wittenburg Township, where they farmed 33 years until their retirement. He has resided in Olivet since then. Bill was an active member of the Olivet United Methodist Church. He taught Sunday school for many years and served on various church boards. He was on the board when the church was built in 1968. Bill was a member of the Gideons International, Rames-Bender American Legion Post #152, Menno, Olivet Senior Citizens, and was one of the original founders of the Menno-Olivet Care Center in Menno.

Bill enjoyed doing carpentry work and gardening all his life. He was often seen around town delivering garden produce, mowing, or moving snow, watering the church flowers and helping people with odd jobs. He loved his family and enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Bill is survived by his son, Victor (Donna) Bush of Olivet, SD; two daughters: Stephanie (Paul) Kallam of San Jose, CA and Dixie Foss of Yankton, SD; five grandchildren: Lisa (Kevin) Edelman, Jared (Amy) Bush, Jessica Kallam, Jill Foss, and Paul Foss; three great-grandchildren: Courtnee, Conner and Morgan Edelman; two brothers: Charles (Margaret) Bush of Ellisville, MO and Jack (Marilyn) Bush of Redondo Beach, CA; one sister, Betty Bush of Globe, AZ and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Orpha and his parents, Harry and Flossie.
