Roy Mac Stevicks
Burke, SD
?, Unknown,
Roy Mac Stevicks was born in Dawson, NE, on November 8, 1916 to Charles and Nora Stevicks. Roy was the tenth of twelve children. In 1919 he moved with his family to a farm north of Lucas, SD. There Roy grew up helping on the farm, attending school in Lucas, and playing baseball. In the early 1930's, his family lost their farm and moved to a farm south of Burke, SD. In the late 1930's, Roy got a job on the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC Camps) in the Black Hills where they cleared trees, built dams and roads through the hills. From there Roy returned home and began farming.
In 1940 Roy met Ruby Melanie Baxa at a dance in Herrick, SD. Roy and Ruby were married on October 11, 1941 in Butte, NE. Due to the time of year with work needing to be done, they waited to have their reception and dance until December 6, 1941. Roy and Ruby lived with Charles and Nora when first married. There they had three children, Sharon, Norma, and Gloria.
In 1947, Roy and Ruby moved their family to the old Wilson Hasche farm southwest of Burke. They farmed, raised cattle, pigs, chickens, and milked cows. Rob and Ruby had five more children, Roy, Karen, Debbie, Renee, and Rhonda. They raised their family as Roy also did custom farming and got into trucking livestock and grain. Roy became well known throughout the area from his work and how he enjoyed helping his neighbors when needed. In his spare time, Roy enjoyed playing baseball, bowling, fishing, playing cards, and attending auctions. He loved finding a good deal and having a good time doing it.
In 1985, Roy moved from the Wilson Hasche farm with his wife Ruby and daughter Rhonda to his son Roy's farm a mile northeast. Roy and Ruby built a new home, and later a two car garage on the land there. Over the next 28 years, Roy spent his retirement raising pigs and helping his son farm. He enjoyed helping his daughters when he could and spending time with his grandchildren.
Roy Mac Stevicks passed away on December 25, 2013 at the Avera Rosebud Country Care Center at the age of 97. Roy and Ruby were married 72 incredible years. Roy often said that he felt his life's greatest achievement was his large family of eight children, 34 grandchildren, 85 great-grandchildren, and 14 great-great grandchildren. Roy lived a good, full life and saw many sad and wonderful events. From wars and depression to changing automobiles and farm equipment, to technological advances like television and cell phones; he experienced too much, was loved by many, and will be dearly missed.
Roy is survived by his wife, Ruby, children: Norma (the late Robert) Antrim of Faith, SD, Roy A. (Betty) Stevicks of Burke, SD, Karen (Glenn) Gilbert of Gillette, WY, Debbie Hoffman of Gillette, WY, Renee (Todd) Cook of Mills, NE, and Rhonda (Shane) Ehnes of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, great grandchildren, great-great grandchildren, sons-in-law, a daughter-in-law, and many relatives and friends.
