Herman Francis Block

Grenville, SD

Herman F. Block, age 87, of Watertown, SD., passed away on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at a Sioux Falls, SD., hospital.

Funeral mass was held on Saturday, June 4, 2005, at the Holy Name Catholic Church, Watertown, SD., with Father John Lantsberger, officiating. Interment was in St. Mary's Cemetery, Watertown, SD. Military Honors were conducted by the Codington County Post 17 of the American Legion. Visitation was held at the Wight, Comes and Sogn Funeral Chapel.

Honorary Pallbearers were Bob Ries Sr., Mary Margaret Dapporn, Ernie and Colleen Vavruska, Veterans Service Office Volunteers, and Sioux Falls V.A. Hospital Staff.

Active Pallbearers were Danny Mickalowski, Leonard Block Jr., Kem Kemnitz, Bill Dargatz, Doug Block, and Steve Kerkvliet.

Herman Francis Block, the son of John F. and Valeria F. (Lewno) Block, was born on December 3, 1917, at Grenville, SD. He attended school near Pickerel Lake. During the 1930's, he worked on the family farm, as well as, for area farmers. He worked at a CCC Camp, for a time, in the Black Hills.

Herman served in the U.S. Army, during World War II, at Camp Carson, Colorado, until being medically discharged. He helped at his father's repair business, in Grenville, repairing autos and tractors.

He moved to Huron, SD., in 1952, where he was employed in various construction jobs, then at Armour Packing Plant, in Huron, SD.

He married Violet Lacroix, in North Dakota, in the 1960's, and they lived in Sisseton, SD., where he was employed at Hannasch Appliance, for several years. Mrs. Block passed away in 1976.

After returning to Watertown, SD., he did scrap metal recycling. Herman was a member of the Sisseton American Legion. He enjoyed playing pinochle and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; four brothers: Aleks, Leonard, Ambrose, Emelian "Emil;" and three infant brothers: Thomas, Stanley, and Adam; and one sister, Anna Block-Dargatz.

He is survived by two sisters: Cecelia Streich of Watertown, SD., and Theresa (Joe) Mickalowski of Sioux Falls, SD.; his brother, John A. Block of Watertown, SD.; and several nieces and nephews.
