Martin V. Palmer, 83, of Huron, died Friday, Feb. 4, 2000, at Huron Regional Medical Center.

The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Welter Funeral Home in Huron, with the Rev. Chuck Fairbrother officiating. Burial will be in Ideal Cemetery at Huron. Pallbearers will be Dean Engel, Alan Heath, Adam Foust, Eric Foust and Lisa Brewer.

Martin V. Palmer was born Dec. 26, 1916, to Milton and Dolly (Harris) Palmer on the family farm near Miller in Hand County. He was educated in the Miller and Wessington Springs area. In 1934, he worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps at Camp Crook in the black Hills, and then for the CCC crews on Crow Creek Dam.

On Feb. 28, 1938, he married Luverne V. Meyers at Woonsocket. They moved to Huron. He worked for Armour and company, then moved to Hastings, Neb., where he worked at the ammunition depot. He entered the Army on July 20, 1945, and was honorably discharged on Dec. 10, 1945. He returned to Huron, working at Armour and Company, retiring in 1978 after 34 years with the company. He then worked for five years as a grounsdkeeper for the State Fairgrounds.

He was a member of Huron Christian Church, the Moose Lodge, and the Meat Packers Union.

He is survived by three daughters, Sylvia (Carl) Wisklund of New Castle, Ind., Carol (Jerry) Lewis of Connorsville, Ind., and Diane (Jessie) Foust of Rushville, Ind.; four sons, Kenneth (Mildred) of Wolsey, Jerry (Vi) of St. Augustine, Fla., Lanny (Shelley) of Huron and Danny (Debra) of Cadiz, Ky.; 25 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on July 24, 1999; five sons, Eugene, Richard, and three infants, Donald, Larry and Jimmy; four infant grandchildren; four brothers, Bill, Harry, Milton "Red", and Nathaniel "Sam"; two sisters, Vivdale Palmer and Irene French, three sisters-in-law, Audrey Palmer, Ruth Palmer and Florence Palmer, and a brother-in-law, John French.
