Marlen Buttke Photos

Marlen Buttke's son, Bob Buttke, shared the following with the Civilian Conservation Corps Museum of South Dakota.

"Our family is pleased that you would like to receive digital photos of our father Marlen Buttke's time at Pactola. He was very proud of his time there and spoke of many friendships. He recounted the fitness of the men and told us of pull-up contests where the winner had performed over 100 pull-ups.

He also told us of times in Hill City. He said that he and some of the others would ride the log trucks in on Friday night, buy a pint of whiskey for 50 cents and attend a dance. Having no place to stay in town, they devised a plan. At the end of the evening, they walked up to the town policeman and made some wisecracks. Predictably, they were escorted to the jail and then served coffee and breakfast the next morning and released. When the policeman saw them approach him on the next Friday evening, he just broke into a smile and said that there was no need to go through the wisecracking again and simply waved at the young men to follow him to the jail for their overnight accommodations.

Marlen's family desperately needed the money sent home monthly and it was a real benefit for the family to have him receive that opportunity.

Thank you for keeping the story of the CCC's alive."
