Melvin Albert Hiermeier (Mel)

Melvin Albert 'Mel' Hiermeier, age 93, died June 21, 2013 at his home.

Mel was born on December 8, 1919 in Cornlea, NE, to Catherine and Andrew J. Hiermeier. He was one of 12 children. He attended school in Pringle and Custer after the family moved to South Dakota. He began his working career when he was 17 in the CCC. He then moved to Butte, MT. and worked in the copper mines. In 1942, he married Ruby Blessing, together they had three sons, Rodney 'Butch', Melvin K. 'Rick', and Ronald. During World War II, Mel was a welder on the Victory Ships in Vancouver, WA. On May 23, 1964, Mel married his soul mate, Linda G. Belmont. This was the beginning of Hiermeier Trucking. They enjoyed supporting the community of Custer for several decades through sponsorship of sports teams, church, and annual events.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Linda of Custer; sons, Butch of Custer; Rick and Ronnie both of Edgemont, SD; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and five great great-grandchildren; two sisters, Cecelia Giometti of Sonoma, CA; Rosella Tholberg of Pilot Rock, OR; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, four sisters, two grandchildren, and one great great-grandson.

Wake service was at 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 25, 2013, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Custer.

Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at St. John the Baptist in Custer with Fr. Tim Hoag officiating. Interment was held at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, in the Pringle Cemetery.

A memorial was established in Melvin's name to benefit the Custer Volunteer Fire Dept. in memory of Leo Harbach and Hospice of the Hills.

Arrangements placed in the care of McColley's Chapel of the Hills in Custer.
