Charles Luther Hayes

Both Charles and Eliza (Charles' wife) worked for what is now Ellsworth AFB. Charles worked as a Federal Guard for eleven years. He was severely injured in a car accident in early 1950 and was retired from Civil Service. He remained handicapped for the rest of his life. Clara Eliza Hayes was a teacher for forty years in South Dakota, the last fourteen at Ellsworth AFB.

Charles Luther Hayes, Born: 02/05/1895, Bloomington, S.D. Entered Army: 07/22/1918, Served: Army of Occupation, Germany. Discharged: 08/18/1919. Sailed for Europe: 11/23/1918. Died: 12/30/1970. Buried: Black Hills National Cemetery, Stugis, S.D. Grave: 1451.

Mr. Hayes worked for Gutzon Borglum at Mount Rushmore for a short time in 1933.
