Egon Carl Buntrock

Columbia, SD

Egon Buntrock died Thursday, April 11, 2002, at his home.

Egon Carl Buntrock was born on Aug. 1, 1915 to Herman and Elise (Podoll) Buntrock in Columbia. He grew up in the Columbia area and graduated from Columbia High School. He worked on the family farm until joining the Civilian Conservation Corps, working at Wind Cave National Park in the Black Hills.

He married Velma Ringgenberg on Aug. 4, 1941, in Columbia. They lived on a farm near Westport for one year and then bought a farm west of Columbia, where they lived until 1972. They then moved into Columbia.

He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Columbia, where he served as treasurer and financial secretary. He belonged to St. John's Men's Club, bowling league, and dart ball team. He served on the Garland Township school board and was township treasurer for 40 years. After moving to Columbia, he served as mayor for 10 years.

He enjoyed basketball and baseball games, playing cards and playing the harmonica.

Survivors include his wife of Columbia; one son, Lloyd (Joan) Buntrock of Columbia; one daughter, Ruth (Virgil) Johnson of Omaha, Neb.; one brother, Walt Buntrock of Aberdeen; three sisters, Gertrude Rehfeld of Warner, Esther Herther of Sioux Falls and Irene Healy of Aberdeen; and six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister.

Casketbearers: Al Ringgenberg, Gary Ringgenberg, Randy Buntrock, Scott Healy, Brian Herther, Cecil Ringgenberg, Dwayne Rehfeld and Robert Ringgenberg.
