Gus F. Wendt
1936, Presho, SCS-2 Tractor Driver
Gus F. Wendt was born Feb. 3, 1913 in Wayne Nebraska ; the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Wendt. He moved with his parents to Luca, SD where he spent part of his childhood before moving to Lyman Co., in 1918. From there he returned briefly to Wayne, NE where he attended high school. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church.
In 1929 he returned to SD and made his home with his parents south of Vivian until his marriage to Marie Oller on Dec. 16, 1932 in Presho. The young couple farmed south of Vivian until 1936 when they moved to Craig, Iowa where they lived for the next ten years. In 1947 Gus, his wife and three sons returned to SD and made their home southwest of Vivian where the family has resided since.
Gus Wendt died 23 May 1966 at the age of 53 in Lyman County, SD. He is survived by his wife, 3 sons, Lonis, Bill and Bob; 7 grandchildren, his mother Alvina, one brother Everett and four aunts.
"Gus Wendt spent the majority of his life at Vivian, SD. After growing up near Wayne, NE, the family moved to a homestead at Lucas in Gregory County, SD, from there to a homestead nine miles south of Vivian. During the depression years the family moved to Craig, Iowa(1936-37) Eventually returning to Vivian and became a successful farm/ranch operator until his premature death at age 53. Our dad, Gus, had a variety of occupations; husband-father, grandfather-Farmer-Rancher-Road Construction operator-truck driver-engine mechanic-night watchman-friend. He served on several community boards and served several years as Lyman County ASC Committee member."
