William Iron Elk (Willie)(Bill)

William Iron Elk of Wanblee, SD was born February 10, 1900 and died Friday February 7, 1969 in Rapid City. He is buried in the Black Hills National Cemetery, Sturgis, South Dakota.

Willie Iron Elk was originally from the Lower Brule Sioux Tribe but spent the majority of his life living in the Eagle Nest District of Jackson County.

He served tours of duty in both World War I and II. He was a Code Talker. Code Talkers served the United States Military by speaking over the radio during times of conflict in their Native language. The code they used to communicate information was never broken by enemy forces.

William Iron Elk married the former Lena Fast Wolf at Kadoka, SD in 1944.
