Ping Pong Tourney Here Attracts 70 Entrants Yesterday November 28, 1938, Lead Daily Call from Lead, South Dakota
Some ping pong style in the big time manner was exhibited here yesterday afternoon and evening as champions were determined in three divisions of an inter-city tournament sponsored by the Mile Hi Ping Pong club of Lead. Bernard Fitzpatrick, of the Pactola CCC camp, came off with honors in the men's singles division by knocking off Kenneth Roundy, also of the Pactola CCC, 3 to 2 in the final match. Mrs. Carl Scheidegger, of Belle Fourche, defeated Mrs. A. Schambers, of Rapid City, in a hotly contested and expertly played final match to determine the championship in the women's division. Kenneth Roundy and Chet R. Bruce, both of the Pactola CCC, teamed up against Mr. and Mrs. Scheidegger to win the final in the open doubles division. The matches were played in the Boy Scout hall on Main and Wall streets.
The tourney, sponsored by the local club, attracted approximately 70 players, over half of them from out of town. Delegations of ping pong artists from Belle Fourche, Rapid City, Pactola CCC and Ft. Meade CCC camps joined Lead players in the event. Lead's women paddle pushers made a better showing in the tournament than did the men. Georgia Murray and Mrs. Cushman Clark reached the semi-finals, but were eliminated by Mrs. Carl Scheidegger and Mrs. Al Schambers respectively.
Trophies are to be awarded to winners in the three divisions, according to officers of the local club. One trophy was donated by the Kate Callahan Jewelry shop and the other two were posted by the club.
