Earl Willard Price, age 97, of Shell Rock, Iowa, died Saturday, June 5, 2010, at the Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community in Waverly.
Earl was born on April 11, 1913 in Spink County, South Dakota, the son of Thomas Arthur and Elsie (Stephens) Price. He was baptized in 1915 and later confirmed at the United Methodist Church in Tulare, South Dakota. Earl graduated from the Tulare High School in 1932. He then worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps for a short time before entering the United States Navy in 1936 where he served on the USS Memphis until being discharged in 1940. Earl then worked for Solar Aircraft as a machinist in San Diego, California. On May 20, 1942, Earl was united in marriage to Neoma Luella Burke in National City, California. In April of 1942, Earl was reenlisted to the US Navy during WWII. After being discharged in 1945, Earl worked as a machinist for National Steel and the Naval Air Rework facility both in San Diego, California. Earl retired in 1971 and moved to Shell Rock. Earl was a member of the Shell Rock United Methodist Church, the AFL-C10 Machinist Union, and Shell Rock American Legion. He enjoyed reading, playing cribbage, Lawrence Welk, latch hook, Chicago Cubs baseball and spending time with his family, most especially his grandchildren.
Earl's memory is honored by two sons, Harry (Roylin) Price of Odessa, Washington and Ray (Polly) Price of Louisville, Mississippi, a daughter, Carol (John) Heckman of Shell Rock, ten grandchildren, twenty three great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers, Harold and Charles Price, a sister, Doris Haag, and a grandson, Bradley Beem.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 A.M. on Tuesday, June 8, at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock. Burial will follow at the Riverside Cemetery in Shell Rock where the Shell Rock American Legion will give honors. Visitation will be held at the Kaiser-Corson Funeral Home in Shell Rock on Monday, June 7, where the family will greet friends from 5 to 8 P.M. Memorials may be directed to the family or made to the South Dakota Civil Conservation Corps Museum and online condolences may be left at www.kaisercorson.com.
