Marvin Earl Berndt

Marvin E. Berndt, 78, of Barstow, died at home Dec. 30, 1999.

A native of Avon, S.D., Berndt lived in Barstow for 41 years. He worked for Southwest Gas Co. for 17 1/2 years and as a millwright with U.S. Borax for 10 years.

Berndt served in the 8th Army Air Force during World War II and was a member of Barstow Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2143.

Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Vera C. Berndt of Barstow; five sons, Gregory Berndt of Barstow, Joel Berndt of Page, Ariz., Danny Berndt of Page, Ariz., Jeffery Berndt of Barstow, and Alan Berndt of Crescent City, Calif.; two brothers, Henry Berndt of Lodi, Calif. and Clarence Berndt of Grand Rapids Mich.; two sisters, Alice Verzani of Armour, SD and Iris Fitch of Whitmore, Calif.; and 13 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Friday, Jan. 14, 2000, at the Free Methodist Church, 800 Yucca Ave., Barstow.

Victor Valley Mortuary of Victorville is in charge of arrangements.

Marvin was one of 4 brothers who served in the CCC.
