TULARE - Orlyn A. Nielson, 84, Tulare, died Monday (May 28, 2001) of natural causes at his home in Tulare.

Funeral services are at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Redfield, with the Rev. Martin Haase officiating. Burial will be at 4:30 p.m. in the Bethlehem Cemetery, Midway.

Visitation is from 11 a.m.-8 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Thelen Funeral Home, Redfield, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

He was born Dec. 16, 1916, at Lawton, Iowa, to Olaf and Margaret (Teske) Nielson. He grew up in Yankton County where he attended school. He entered the Civilian Conservation Corps at age 18 and worked in the Nemo (Camp Este) area. He then worked in Spink County for a time and in Iowa until he joined the military. He enlisted at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., on Jan. 22, 1942. He served overseas as a sergeant in the infantry in Rhineland Central Europe during World War II. During his service, he received the Bronze Star Medal. He was discharged on Nov. 13, 1945. He married Arlene Spear of Turton on Sept. 28, 1943, at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, Redfield. After his discharge from the service, he farmed in the Frankfort area for 17 years. He then moved to Tulare where he purchased and operated a farm in that area. He semi-retired from farming in 1986.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene, Tulare; one son, Larry (Liz) Nielson, Tulare; three daughters: Sharon Grimm, Ocala, Fla.; Janice (Greg) Benning, Forrest City, Iowa; and Peggy Nielson, Rapid City; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one brother, Luther Nielson, Mission Hill; two sisters: Olive Learing, Irene; and Joyce Jensen, Viborg; two sisters-in-law: Irene Boylan, Yankton; and Phyllis Nielson, Irene; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, one grandson and one son-in-law.
