Douglas Efrem Munson, 85, Bonesteel, died Monday, Dec. 27, 2004, at Gregory Community Hospital, Gregory.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Hope United Church of Christ, Fairfax. Burial will be in the Rosebud Cemetery, Bonesteel. There will a 7 p.m. prayer service today at the church. Visitation will be one hour prior to both services at the church.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clausen Funeral Home, Burke.
He was born on Jan. 29, 1919, at the family homestead southwest of Garretson to Aaron and Wuaneta (Long) Munson.
He grew up on the farm, attended country school through the eighth grade and graduated from Garretson High School in 1937.
He served an enlistment in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the Black Hills following his graduation.
In 1939, he moved to California, eventually settling in Santa Monica, where he worked as a tool and die maker during World War II for Douglas Aircraft.
He married Lois Hollmann, formerly of Armour, on Oct. 8, 1944.
In 1946, they returned to South Dakota after living in Hills, Minn., Beaver Creek, Minn., Sioux Falls and Wagner.
He purchased the blacksmith shop in Armour, where they lived until retiring and moving to Bonesteel in 1984.
He was a competitive target shooter. He was a member of the Isaac Walton League, NRA, served terms on the Armour City Council and was a former member of the UCC of Armour and a present member of Hope UCC, Fairfax.
He is survived by his wife, his children; Cheryl Jons and husband, Ed, Bonesteel; Greg and wife Cindy, Bloomfield, Iowa; and Wendy Larson and husband, Harvey, Beresford; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; and one brother, Maurice, Canyon County, Calif.
He in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
