Meryl Albert Long (Shorty)

Meryl Long passed away at his home on May 27, 2008 at the age of 92 years. He was born to Fred and Dora Long in Casey, Iowa, who later relocated to Armour, South Dakota, where he received and completed his education. After spending 2 years in the CCC's during the depression, he purchased the Park & Shop Grocery in Rapid City, which was one of the first self serve grocery stores in the area.
In 1949 he moved his family to Gresham, Oregon and worked in property development and later became responsible for the development and construction of the Mount Hood Community College in Gresham. He retired in 1980 and moved to Hemet where he was a long time and very active member of the Kiwanis Club and an Elk member. He also spent 13 years with the Hemet Volunteer Police Department, until the last year of his life. He contributed to many humanitarian events and projects in Hemet.
He married Sylvia Huwe in 1939 and to this union they had 3 wonderful sons. Sylvia passed away in 1975. He married Virginia Vest in 1981 in Gresham and relocated to Hemet at that time. He is survived by his twin sons, Donald of Richmond, Virginia and David of Oregon City, Oregon, and their families; brother, Marvin of Hemet and sisters, Harriet and Mardell of South Dakota; his wife, Virginia and his two stepdaughters, Janet and Linda; and many other family members and friends, all that he dearly loved. He was preceded in death by his son, Thomas of Seattle, Washington; a brother, Donald and a sister, LaVonne.
A Memorial Service will be held on Sunday, June 8th at 2:00pm in the Panorama Village Clubhouse located off Mayberry Avenue on Panorama Drive. In lieu of flowers, please donate to The Kiwanis Children's Fund.
